An expert speaks: the implant that restores naturalness after breast cancer

I’ve been through bilateral breast reconstruction, and from that experience, I know what it means to look in the mirror and feel something is missing. It’s a mix of strength and vulnerability that so many women face during this journey. The areola and nipple may seem like a small detail, but they’re not. They complete the circle, they make you feel whole again. Today I want to share an innovation that is transforming the lives of many women: FixNip™ NRI, a nipple–areola implant that offers a natural, lasting, and minimally invasive solution.

When I underwent a radical mastectomy on one breast and a more conservative prophylactic surgery on the other, I thought the hardest part would be accepting the loss. Afterwards came the reconstruction, the prosthesis, the recovery… but there was one detail that accompanied me every day: the absence of the nipple and the areola. It may seem like a small detail, but it changes a lot how you see yourself.

I remember the first time I looked at myself naked in the mirror after surgery: the skin had healed, but I felt the image was incomplete. If you’ve been or are in that process, you probably know what I mean. And I’m not speaking from a medical manual, but from firsthand experience, with all its phases, all its scars, and all its hopes.

FixNip, the advance we’ve all been waiting for

Until now, the techniques available to reconstruct the nipple have had a common problem: over time, they have lost projection. Many women experience flattening or a lack of symmetry, and some even necrosis. The result is frustrating and, in many cases, insufficient.

When I first read about FixNip™ NRI, I thought: “Is it really possible that something so simple?” And the more I researched, the more convinced I became that this was a true revolution.

FixNip™ NRI is a breakthrough from GC Aesthetics® designed to take reconstruction to the next level. Instead of invasive techniques whose results often fade over time, this flower-shaped silicone implant is placed between the prosthesis and the skin to maintain the nipple's natural and lasting shape and projection.

The procedure is surprisingly simple and not painful: a small incision, a brief intervention under local anaesthesia done in the office, and in most cases, you can return to your normal life the same day.

Furthermore, it is compatible with different types of reconstruction: implants, expanders, flaps (DIEP, PAP, latissimus dorsi), fat transfer, and even in patients who have undergone radiation therapy. Best of all, FixNip™ NRI complements micropigmentation rather than replacing it, first the projection is restored, then the artistic tattooing adds natural color. The results are strikingly realistic.

More and more hospitals — including public ones — are incorporating it into their reconstructive surgeries. Because this isn’t just about aesthetics: it’s about emotional well-being. Studies consistently show that patient satisfaction increases dramatically when nipple–areola reconstruction is included.

If you are going through this journey, I want to tell you something: don’t settle for less. Reconstruction is not complete until you recover your full image, and that includes the areola and nipple. FixNip™ is a powerful step forward, one that helps us recognize ourselves again, without daily reminders of cancer when we look in the mirror.

This isn’t simply the end of a reconstruction. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, rediscovering ourselves, strong, whole, and fully in control of our bodies.
